Calif. man is shot after attempt to hit officers with vehicle

A suspect was hospitalized with gunshot wounds early Tuesday in the city's fifth shooting in about two weeks, police said.

The incident began when an unnamed Vallejo Police Officer on patrol near Sonoma Boulevard and Marine World Parkway, noticed a gray Nissan being driven erratically, according to a police statement. When the officer tried to stop the car, the driver "fled at a high rate of speed," police said.

Another officer joined the pursuit, as the suspect "continued to drive in a reckless manner and discarded unknown items from his vehicle," according to the statement.

The suspect rammed a patrol car to escape capture and hit a parked car on a residential street, police said.

When officers exited their cars to arrest the suspect, he became aggressive and tried to escape, again ramming patrol cars and driving onto sidewalks, police said. The suspect also aimed his car at the officers, who were then on foot, they said. It was then that officers fired their weapons at the suspect, who was struck in the arm and shoulder.

The suspect drove another two blocks before officers disabled his car, police said.

The suspect was transported to Walnut Creek's John Muir Medical Center with non-lifethreatening injuries, according to the statement.

"Because this is an ongoing investigation, no further information can be released at this time," Vallejo Police Department spokeswoman Lori Lee said in a recorded message. She did not immediately return calls for comment.

This was the fourth shooting in Vallejo since last Monday, when a 36-year-old woman was shot in the leg while walking in the unincorporated area of Vallejo.

The city's string of shootings started the previous Monday when 20-year-old Ivan Valdez was shot and killed in the 300 block of Illinois Street.

On Thursday night, a 34-year-old Vallejo man was shot in the face and shoulder in the 2700 block of Tuolumne Street. And a 16-year-old boy was shot multiple times last Friday outside a convenience store on Mini Drive.
