MONTEREY, Calif. — A man was killed after a wrong-way, high-speed highway chase by Monterey police on Highway 1 late Saturday, officials reported.
At 11:23 p.m., a Monterey police officer tried to stop a vehicle for "various traffic violations" at Casa Verde Way and North Fremont Street, Lt. Jeff Jackson said. The driver did not yield and attempted to evade the officer, Jackson said.
As he was pursued by police, the driver drove the wrong way onto the southbound Casa Verde Way off-ramp from Highway 1. He continued going the wrong way on the highway at "a high rate of speed," police said. Officers said he lost control and crashed into a tree.
The man was taken to Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula, where he died.
There were no passengers in the vehicle, officers said.
The California Highway Patrol is investigating the crash and the man's name was withheld pending notification of family by the Monterey County Sheriff's Office.
