FOWLERVILLE, Mich. - A 20-year-old East Lansing man is dead after his motorcycle struck a Fowlerville police cruiser and crashed during a chase with police on Interstate 96 early this morning.

Sheriff Bob Bezotte said the incident began about 4:20 a.m. when a county sheriff’s deputy running radar at Mason Road and westbound I-96 clocked the motorcyclist, identified as Carl Albert Stamm IV, traveling at 104 mph. He later accelerated to speeds of more than 130 mph.

Stamm, who was a student at Lansing Community College and a student at Michigan State University, tried to go around the Fowlerville officer’s vehicle, but his motorcycle struck the rear of the police cruiser, causing the motorcyclist to crash in the median.
