When Merced County Sheriff's Department Deputy Ralph Zyskowski stopped a suspicious Honda Civic about noon Tuesday in the 15000 block of Oak Street, he was surprised what he found behind the dashboard.

Zyskowski and Deputy Bronkel Nobari noticed the radio in the gray four-door sedan was ajar. Tucked behind the radio inside the dashboard were three loaded handguns, one a 9-millimeter and two .22-caliber revolvers.

"It definitely doesn't give you a good feeling when you run across something like that. But it's a win-win because guns are off the street and you don't have to worry about them," Zyskowski said.

The driver of the car, Moses Gutierrez, 31, of Atwater and his passenger, Eric Wayne Black, 23, of Livingston ultimately were arrested on suspicion of carrying a concealed weapon within a vehicle and being felons in possession of a handgun.

Black and Gutierrez also were charged with removing the serial number from a gun, a felony. Zyskowski said during the booking process in Merced County Jail, correctional officers found 0.2 ounces of methamphetamine in a plastic bag in the elastic trim of Gutierrez' running pants, along with a meth pipe.

Gutierrez was charged with taking an unlawful substance into a correctional facility and possession of narcotics paraphernalia.
