Chase, arrest after N.C. cop hit in traffic stop

The News & Observer

HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. — An officer was taken to the hospital early Saturday after a motorist hit his vehicle and led police on a chase to Durham, authorities said.

Cpl. William Dillon stopped a 1994 Buick Skylark driving erratically on U.S. 70 East at 1:37 a.m., Lt. Davis Trimmer said. The Skylark went into reverse and hit Dillon's cruiser before the officer got out his vehicle.

The suspect vehicle then led Orange County deputies and state Highway Patrol troopers on a chase into Durham, where officers used stop sticks on Hillsborough Road near the Durham Freeway.

"They pursued him at not a high rate of speed, but the guy wouldn't stop," Trimmer said.

Dillon, who participated in the chase, was released from UNC Hospitals after treatment for back and neck pains. Shawn Joseph Obermeier, 39, of Pittsburgh, was jailed in lieu of $60,000 bail and faces six charges.
