SAN ANTONIO — After being shot during a police chase and spending two weeks in intensive care, there is not much more doctors can do for Police Officer Robert Deckard, his family said in a statement Wednesday.

“Although it pains us to let him go, we must begin to and are thankful for the fact that we have had these few precious days with him since he was injured,” the statement said. “We do take pride in knowing that Bobby was doing what he loved doing; protecting the citizens of San Antonio.”

The family also said that when the time comes to say goodbye in the next few days, Deckard will give others a second chance through organ donation.

Deckard remains at San Antonio Military Medical Center, where he has been since the shooting Dec. 8. Since the shooting, doctors worked to save Deckard's life, but his prognosis, according to earlier statements, had been grim.
