MILWAUKEE — A Milwaukee police officer has been released from the hospital, a Froedtert Hospital employee said Tuesday morning, after he was treated for injuries received Monday during a fight with a suspect.

The suspect, now in custody, is accused of beating the officer, Dwain Monteilh, and trying to take his gun.

Monteilh and Officer Roy Horn, assigned to the Neighborhood Task Force, attempted to stop two men whom they observed "acting suspiciously" in the 2800 block of W. Auer Ave. about 2:30 p.m. Monday, according to a police news release.

When the officers tried to talk to the men on the porch, the men attempted to flee and then each man fought with an officer. Monteilh was punched and kicked in the face several times as one man tried to take his gun, authorities said.

The officers were able to call for help, and both suspects were arrested. Monteilh was treated at Froedtert for a broken orbital and bleeding behind the eye.

Chief Edward Flynn addressed reporters Monday night and praised the officers for their dedication and restraint.

"When somebody goes for your gun, you have every right to use deadly force," Flynn said. "Deadly force was justified in this case, and those officers did not use it."

The Journal Sentinel typically does not name suspects until charges have been filed in court.
