MOSS BLUFF, La. — A Louisiana State Police trooper died in a two-car crash Tuesday night near Moss Bluff, the first trooper killed while on duty in more than a decade.

State police identified the trooper as Duane Dalton, 39, of Lake Charles. He is survived by his wife and three sons.

Dalton was driving his state police unit south about 7:30 p.m. on U.S. Route 171 approaching Gloria Lane near Moss Bluff. Debra Bourque, 50, of Lake Charles was headed east on Gloria Lane in a Nissan Murano and pulled out in front of Dalton's car, state police said. On impact, Dalton's car spun, entered a ditch and hit a culvert on the driver's side.

He was flown by Acadian Air-Med to Lake Charles Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
