Fla. deputy killed in crash while driving to work
The patrol car was struck by a vehicle speeding the wrong way on the highway
ST. JOHN'S COUNTY, Fla. — A St. Johns County deputy on his way to work died this morning after his patrol car was struck by a vehicle going the wrong way on Florida 9A in Jacksonville, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The St. Johns Sheriff's Office identified the deputy as James Louis Anderson Jr., 44, a retired Marine and father of four from Jacksonville. The other driver was Kris Elliott Caudilla, 26, of Jacksonville. He remains in serious condition at Shands Jacksonville hospital.
Investigators are still trying to determine how the accident occurred. An off-duty Jacksonville Beach police officer driving in his personal car said Caudilla's SUV passed him going the wrong way at a high rate of speed moments before the crash. The officer swerved off the road and reported the incident to the Florida Highway Patrol. He did not know about the accident until later.
