When the average citizen hears the word “forensics” they immediately think of the many CSI shows on television and how criminals are apprehended. In the law enforcement profession “forensics” has a multitude of definitions, but most importantly in a sexual assault investigation, “forensics” can mean testifying in a court of law about the investigation performed by the law enforcement investigator to identifying a specific type of evidence such as a fingerprint or DNA. In a sexual assault investigation a law enforcement investigator who can connect some forensics to the alleged crime, then this may support that a crime was or wasn’t committed.
