A four-year veteran of the New Orleans Police Department was hospitalized Monday after she was punched in the throat trying to quell a fight between a 23-year-old man and his girlfriend, police said.

Officer Bianca Boone was in good condition and recovering Monday afternoon. Her attacker, Travis Joel Buzzard was booked with simple domestic battery, simple battery on a police officer, resisting a lawful arrest and simple criminal damage, according to police.

NOPD spokeswoman Bambi Hall said a fight at Ursuline and Burgundy streets was reported to 8th District police around 1 p.m. as the domestic dispute between Buzzard and his 22-year-old girlfriend turned physical. Police arrived, confronted Buzzard and tried to detain him.

But "in an attempt to resist arrest," Hall said, "Buzzard assaulted officers then tried to break and run."

Hall said Boone chased, then pounced on, Buzzard. The two struggled, she said, and at some point Buzzard landed a blow flush on the officer's throat.

Boone was taken to a local hospital where she was listed in good condition. She was being treated and was expected to be released Monday evening.
