FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — A teen that was taken into custody for a probation violation is being called a hero after helping save the life of the officer who was booking him.
According to the Sun-Sentinel, 17-year-old Jamal Rutledge was sitting handcuffed as 49-year-old Officer Franklin Foulks was doing paperwork when Officer Foulks suddenly collapsed.
Rutledge immediately began kicking the security fence in the booking area to alert other police officers of the trouble.
Responding officers then performed CPR and used a defibrillator on the semiconscious officer before additional crews arrived and transported him to a hospital.
Rutledge was inside the facility for violation of probation on burglary charges.
Hospital medical staff members credit Rutledge’s quick action and the response of other officers for Foulks’ survival.
Rutledge and three officers involved will be honored later this month for their actions.
