The incident occurred when a trooper from the Cadillac Post was assisting the female driver on southbound M-37 near Hilltop Road in Grand Traverse County’s Blair Township at 10:05 p.m. on March 9.

Weather conditions were less than ideal at the time of the incident with heavy rain, ice, sleet, snow and high winds all present in the area, which caused poor visibility.

While the trooper was talking to the motorist outside of her vehicle, his patrol car was struck from behind by a passing car traveling southbound on M-37, forcing the patrol car into the trooper and the motorist.

EMS personnel later determined they did not require any medical treatment, however, the female driver of the vehicle that hit the patrol car suffered a facial injury.

While she was receiving medical treatment, her vehicle was then struck by another vehicle that had been traveling southbound on M-37, forcing her vehicle back into the trooper’s patrol car.

The male driver of the second collision was not injured and no additional injuries were reported.

Neither at-fault driver appeared to be impaired, according to police, but their speed during the difficult travel conditions is a main factor. The crashes are under investigation.

The Michigan State Police Cadillac Post was assisted on scene by Grand Traverse County Sheriff Department and Blair Township Fire and EMS.
