EL PASO, Texas — The final hospital patient from the Aug. 3 mass shooting at a Walmart in El Paso, Texas, died on Saturday night, bringing the death toll for the massacre up to 23.

Guillermo “Memo” Garcia was with his family on the morning of the killings, fund-raising for his daughter’s soccer team in the store’s parking lot. He was shot multiple times by the gunman and remained in the hospital for the next nine months.

Garcia’s wife, Jessica Coca Garcia, survived the attack after being shot in the leg. She shared a message with the local El Paso ABC station after her husband passed.

“We lost a warrior but gained an angel,” she wrote. “He fought long and hard. With the help of all his troops he won many battles but lost the war.”

Accused gunman Patrick Crusius, 21, has been charged with capital murder and federal hate crimes and remains in custody. He has pleaded not guilty.
