By PoliceOne Staff
Deputy Dean Ridings of the Spotsylvania County (Va.) Sheriff's Office was killed while conducting marine patrol on Lake Anna, located about 100 miles southwest of Washington DC. Ridings was reportedly on patrol with his partner, Deputy William Schroeder, when their boat was struck by a large wake or a series of wakes, causing it to turn sideways. Deputy Riding subsequently sustained an injury to his head, while Deputy Schroeder was thrown overboard.
Other boaters assisted Deputy Schroeder out of the water and back onto the patrol boat, which he immediately returned to shore. Both deputies were transported to Mary Washington Hospital, where Deputy Ridings succumbed to his injuries.
Washington news radio station WTOP reported that the accident occurred around half past noon on Saturday, a time at which boat traffic on the lake is usually very heavy, “making the waters rougher than usual.”
Deputy Ridings, 52, had served with the Spotsylvania County Sheriff's Office for six years. He is survived by his wife, two sons, and three grandchildren. Both of his sons also serve as deputies with the agency.
