JACKSON COUNTY, Mo. — Two men charged Tuesday with kidnapping and sexually assaulting a Johnson County sheriff’s deputy will not fight extradition to Kansas.
William Luth, 24, of Blue Springs, and Brady Newman-Caddell, 21, of Independence, appeared before a Jackson County Circuit Court judge via closed-circuit television Tuesday afternoon and agreed not to fight extradition.
Luth and Newman-Caddell were each charged earlier Tuesday in Johnson County District Court with two counts of rape and single counts of aggravated kidnapping and aggravated sodomy.
Bond for each was set at $1 million.
The Johnson County sheriff’s office said Tuesday morning that the men were arrested Monday night across the state line in Jackson County. Authorities said they also have found the vehicle allegedly used in the Friday night incident.
The arrests came after authorities released surveillance camera footage of the car that was used in the kidnapping.
The image was captured Friday night at an Olathe convenience store where the deputy had stopped before driving to work. Investigators said the abductors followed the deputy after she left the store.
The female deputy was then abducted in the parking lot outside the Olathe detention facility in what officials called an ambush.
She was not armed and was not in uniform, officials said.
Sheriff’s office investigators said they had no evidence to indicate that she was targeted because she was a law enforcement officer, but also said they had not ruled anything out.
After she was forced into the car, the deputy’s eyes were covered with a sweatshirt and she was driven around while being sexually assaulted. Her abductors released her several hours later in Jackson County.
Investigators said they had recovered DNA evidence in the case that was submitted to the lab for testing.
Johnson County Sheriff Frank Denning has scheduled a Wednesday morning news conference to discuss the case.
Luth and Newman-Caddell were being held in the Jackson County Detention Center pending extradition. It was not known when they will be returned to Johnson County to face the charges.
