SANFORD, Fla. — The Sanford Police Department received a bovine assist in apprehending a felony suspect Monday in Sanford, according to a video recorded by a Seminole County Sheriff’s Office helicopter team.
Authorities were in pursuit of Jennifer Anne Kaufman, who was riding in a white Subaru with a reportedly stolen tag. Kaufman, 46, was in the car with two others: Erin Leigh Thomas, 38, and Jamie Michael Young, 46, according to the Sanford Police Department’s arrest report.
Sanford officers attempted to slow the vehicle with “stop sticks,” or spike strips, which failed to work.
However, the vehicle crashed shortly after, at the corner of Celery Avenue and Sipes Avenue, just near a cow pasture owned by American Land Investments of Central Florida LLC, Seminole County Property Appraiser records show.
Kaufman and Young exited the vehicle and escaped separately on foot into the cow pasture. Young was apprehended by a Sanford police K9.
Kaufman was also pursued by animals — but in her case, the animals included a herd of cows. About 16 cows chased Kaufman southeast through the pasture, eventually cornering her at a fence where Sanford police officers were waiting to arrest her.
The police report states the Subaru contained 1.3 grams of cocaine, a pipe burnt at both ends, two spoons and two clear-colored needles.
Sanford police didn’t say whether they would consider creating a bovine chase unit.
