ROCKVILLE, Md. — A man on the scene of a house fire Wednesday approached a news crew and confessed to setting the home ablaze.
“Me! Me! I set it on fire,” said the young adult man, who would only identify himself as, “Carlos.”
While firefighters worked to extinguish the fire, “Carlos” remained calm and relaxed. He answered WJLA crew’s follow-up questions.
Here’s the exchange:
Reporter: “How did you do it?”
Carlos: “I just poured gasoline on the floor, set it on fire, went to grab a drink, and came back.”
Reporter: “How did setting this fire help you?”
Carlos: “Just so you [the media] could get here … for your attention.”
He went on to describe deplorable living conditions inside the home that he set on fire.
Reporter: “Why didn’t you report the alleged deplorable conditions to police first?”
Carlos: “I did. I did,” adding no one took his complaints seriously.
After the interview, he walked up to two police officers and told them that he set the house on fire. He was then arrested and taken to the police department for questioning.
“I’m just thinking about all of the firefighters whose lives were put in jeopardy because of this. There’s no excuse for it, none at all,” neighbor Linda Ekizian said.
No one was injured in the fire. The house was a total loss.
