SALEM, Mass. — Police in Massachusetts helped organize a special day to honor a young girl with cancer.

WHDH reports that on Friday, members of the Salem Police Department met 6-year-old Dior Stavros outside her school with a special escort to the police station. Stavros was diagnosed with leukemia last summer and has been going to chemotherapy.

Stavros was named an honorary police officer, and the Cops for Kids Foundation presented her family with a $5,000 check to help with her medical expenses. The young girl’s parents said their daughter always stays upbeat despite her illness.

Her parents thanked police and the community for giving their daughter a special day.
