BURTON, Mich. — Two Burton police officers responded to a 911 call from a woman whose pipe had burst and panicked when she couldn’t shut off her water, and one of the officers went above the call of duty to help her.
Dorothy Roalez, 82, lives alone and didn’t have the money for a plumber to come fix a broken pipe, according to MLive.
“I called plumbers and they wouldn’t come out unless I had the money right up front,” Roalez said. “I told them it was a weekend — I didn’t have no money on me.”
Burton police officers Don Schreiber and Sean Nelson arrived at her home Sunday morning and shut off the water and showed her where the cut-off valve was.
Schreiber returned to the home after his shift with his friend, Burton firefighter Phil Howell, to take measurements to replace the pipe.
Schrieber refused to discuss how much he and Nelson spent on supplies because he didn’t expect any accolades, according to the report.
“It really wasn’t that big of a project,” he said. “It was an opportunity to help somebody that needed help. It was just the right thing to do.”
