FORT WORTH, Texas — Fort Worth police officers want to lend a helping hand to restaurants struggling to stay afloat during the mandatory shutdowns resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Beginning Friday, March 20, the Fort Worth Police Officers Association will support local businesses by purchasing hundreds of bulk meals daily for police officers in every patrol division, according to a press release by the FWPOA.

President Manny R. Ramirez said in the release that the FWPOA will focus on the most vulnerable restaurants in town and order from those locations to help keep them afloat.

“The goal of this effort is two-fold: to ensure that our local economy can survive these tumultuous times, and to ensure that our dedicated frontline police officers have at least one good meal as they protect and serve,” he wrote.

“We recognize that it is going to take contributions from every single one of us to ensure that our great city endures,” Ramirez added. “We are committed to doing our part to support our business community in their time of need, as they so often step up to support our city.”

The FWPOA has also set up a link where residents can donate to help fund meal purchases.

On Wednesday, Texas Governor Greg Abbott ordered all restaurants, bars, clubs and gyms in the state to close their dining rooms and other indoor facilities. Businesses that serve food are only allowed to serve food to-go, delivery or curbside until April 3.
