JOHANNESBURG — A city official says Cape Town police are receiving training from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration on how to fight the high rate of drug- and gang-related crime in the South African city.

Alderman J. P. Smith said Friday that Cape Town police are taught using a video simulation program, immersing the officer in a potentially dangerous situation to teach them how to make split-second decisions about using lethal force. Officers are also trained how to gather intelligence from informants.

Smith said officers from various U.S. police departments have also trained the city’s specialized police units. He said Cape Town has seen the number of arrests for drug- and gang-related crimes increase to 2,800 arrests last year.
