Crazed employee identified in Costco attack, officer recovering
One officer was shot in the leg by a bullet that ricocheted during the shooting
STERLING, Va. — Two people have been shot at a Costco store in Loudoun County, Va., officials said on Wednesday afternoon.
A Costco food service employee, 38-year-old Mhai Scott of Sterling, Va., was reportedly wielding a knife and scissors and threatening employees at the store, officials said.
Witnesses called the police and they showed up when the employee became threatening with the knife to police, officials said in a news conference.
Renee Haber works at the Costco in Sterling. She said she saw Scott had a knife on her and was frightening her supervisor. She said the Scott was "just making strange comments about the pizza."
In a press release, sheriff's office authorities said deputies asked Scott several times to drop the weapons but she refused and advanced towards them.
One deputy used a TASER on the Scott, but that didn't really slow her down. That's when another deputy fired his gun at her, according to authorities.
Scott was killed as a result of the shooting, and another deputy was shot in the leg, Chapman said.
The deputy who was taken to the hospital and has since been released. Authorities say he is in good condition.
Another witness, Robert Krause, said, "I was at the front of the building. I saw some officers run into Costco and a few minutes later there were some gunshots, about 5 of them."
The woman killed was a contractor for Club Demonstration Services. The president of the company, Don Dohanyos, said in a statement:
"We are extremely saddened by the situation that occurred at the Costco warehouse in Sterling, VA earlier today. We are treating this with the utmost sensitivity, and are cooperating fully with the authorities as they gather more details on the events leading up to the shooting of our CDS associate. In the meantime, our thoughts and prayers are with everyone who was affected by this event."
