GRAPHIC: Edged weapons and officer safety

FAIR WARNING: GRAPHIC IMAGE BELOW.

Ever wonder why cops shoot people armed with knives, broken bottles, shards of glass, and whatnot? Because if an experienced knife fighter gets in close, that cop may not ever get the opportunity to use their handgun before the attacker can do damage.

Remember the 21-foot rule? Well, don’t forget the ‘Ego Rule.’

The photo below is from one of my friends in the Broward County (Fla.) Sheriff’s Office, who forwarded it to me to get the message out. According to what I was told, this image is of an officer “trained in hand-to-hand combat.” Now what I’m about to pass along here is second-hand — possibly third-, maybe fourth- or fifth-hand — hearsay information, and we don’t know for sure what happened or what this cop was thinking, but I was told that “due to his size and fighting skills, he thought could disarm a knife wielding aggressor.”

Now, again, I wasn’t there and I’ve never talked with the officer about this. Why do I pass it along then? Here’s why...

To all the idiots out there who always say, “Why did the cops have to shoot him? He only had knife... he didn’t have to be shot.”

To which, I respond, “Tough ____ ...shoot ‘em.”

If an officer tells a subject to drop your weapon, they MUST COMPLY. If the subject is stupid, on crack, mental or just “too scared” then too bad. No one deserves what this cop got for just doing his job. This is vivid proof of how deadly people who are “only armed with a knife” can be. Keep this in the back of your mind when confronting someone armed with an edged weapon.
