Officer stabbed in Oakland; suspect arrested

OAKLAND — A police officer is in stable condition after he was stabbed in the neck just steps from police headquarters, authorities said.

At 5:37 p.m., an officer was walking back to his car in the 600 block of Jefferson Street after ending a shift when a person approached and stabbed him.

Officers set up a perimeter along Washington and Jefferson streets near 6th and 7th streets, and quickly arrested a woman suspect steps from the scene, sources said. The motive for the attack is unknown.

Other officers responded and took the officer in a patrol vehicle to Highland Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition, Oakland police Officer Johnna Watson said.

Oakland police Chief Anne E. Kirkpatrick came with her command staff and joined other officers at the hospital to be with family members Thursday night.
