NEW SHOREHAM, R.I.- A Connecticut man accused of firing a shotgun at police officers on Block Island in Rhode Island has been found incompetent to stand trial.
Ernesto Lacayo of Fairfield allegedly walked toward a police station in June with a shotgun. Confronted by a state trooper, Lacayo led police on a slow chase, bailed out of his car near sand dunes, then opened fire on several police officers.
No one was hurt.
Police say Lacayo claimed to be a cousin of infamous mobster Charles "Lucky" Luciano when he was arrested.
Prosecutors say he is now being treated at the state's Eleanor Slater Hospital.
Defendants who are judged incompetent aren't capable of understanding court proceedings or participating in their own defense.
