CICERO, Ill. — Illinois police officers rescued an 11-year-old boy trapped inside an apartment fire as flames engulfed the building early Tuesday morning.

The Chicago Tribune reports that Cicero police officers arrived at the scene and reportedly heard the boy’s mother scream “my son is still inside.” The officers were able to get inside the apartment and kicked open the door to pull him out of the building.

The officers performed CPR on the boy until the ambulance arrived to rush him and his mother to the hospital. Cicero spokesman Ray Hanania said they were both treated for smoke inhalation and were in serious condition.

Hanania said 17 people, including the boy and his mother, were displaced from the fire. They are receiving assistance from Cicero Family Services.
