BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. — An officer was seriously injured last week after being struck by an SUV while pursuing a shoplifter.

According to Fox News, Boynton Beach Police Officer Greg Wertman was trying to cross a street when he got hit by the vehicle. Wertman had stopped his cruiser on the opposite side of the street and stepped out to pursue the suspect when he was struck.

The suspect, Ryan Moody, was running from a Kohl’s store when officers attempted to arrest him. While Moody was escaping, he darted in front of Wertman crossing a street, prompting the officer to attempt to stop him.

In released video, Wertman can be seen being hit by the SUV, whose driver accelerated because of a green light. The driver wasn’t able to stop in time, striking and seriously injuring Wertman.
