REDDING, Calif. — Redding police fatally shot a man at an apartment complex after a standoff spurred by his outrage over Obama’s new gun law measures, The Record Searchlight reported.
Police responded to calls of a man shooting a gun outside of the apartment complex Tuesday evening. They found the man behaving erratically and yelling about the president, Lt. Pete Brindley told the news site.
“Witnesses on scene later advised detectives that the suspect was upset about the recent legislation regarding gun laws issued by President Obama,” sheriff’s Sgt. Brian Jackson told the publication.
Officers attempted to negotiate with the man, who went in and out of his apartment 10 to 15 times. They then attempted to subdue him with a K-9 and beanbag rounds.
“He made several statements that he was in fact armed,” Brindley said.
The last time the man left the apartment, officers fired several rounds at him, killing him.
An eyewitness, who recorded the incident, said the last time the man emerged from his apartment he was armed with a firearm. Police confiscated the video and have said it will not be released to the public.
Inside the apartment, officers found a 9mm Beretta handgun with a spent shell casing in the chamber and live rounds in the magazine.
Brindley told the Record Searchlight officers believed their lives were in danger.
The man, who has not been named, may not have been legally allowed to own firearms due to a felony conviction. The man pleaded no-contest in a 2009 illegal discharge of a weapon and was sentenced to 60 days in jail. His criminal history also shows several traffic tickets, a dismissed misdemeanor battery count and petty theft conviction.
Officers were placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
