Video: Suicide prevention in law enforcement

Video discusses the everyday things law enforcement officers deal with that may contribute to thoughts of suicide

DENVER, Colo. — A video produced by the Carson J Spencer Foundation, a leading innovation in suicide prevention, follows law enforcement officers through the issues and problems in their career that may contribute to thoughts of suicide.

“Across this country, police officers do amazing work but they also often times forget that that takes a toll on what they do because they see horrendous crimes,” Woodway Police Department Chief and IACP President Yost Zakhary said in the video.

An average day at work can start with a traffic titcket in the morning and escalate to an assault in the afternoon, Denver Police Department Chaplain Dr. Jackson Pope said in the video. The events from the day are harder to let go than most officers realize, he said.

The Carson J Foundation sustains a passion for living by delivering innovative and effective suicide prevention programs, according to its website.

The video gives ways to support officers in order to prevent suicide and offers solutions to command staff on how to fully engage your team to find their passion for living. Resources are also listed to aid in the process.
