DENVER — A Denver officer raced after an armed robbery suspect on foot and took a bullet to the leg while protecting bystanders, newly released bodycam footage shows.

Denver Police Officers Travis Lloyd and Sean Drew intervened June 13 when a witness flagged them down to report a man who had pulled out a gun in a local convenience store.

Carnell Nelson, 29, started to run when he saw the officers approaching him. According to KDVR, Nelson fired five shots during the pursuit, striking Lloyd in the leg and a bystander in the foot.

Lloyd returned fire and struck Nelson in the chest, killing him.

The video also shows Drew applying a tourniquet to Lloyd’s leg as Lloyd keeps his weapon on Nelson. Later, footage reveals the officers giving first aid to the wounded bystander as backup units secured the scene.

Lloyd was “defending himself and other people on the street” when he shot and killed Nelson, Denver District Attorney Beth McCann told KDVR

He will not face charges in the shooting.
