N.M. Police Find Guns After Gunbattle Involving Undercover Agents
ESPANOLA, N.M. (AP) -- State police investigating a gunbattle involving two undercover Santa Fe County narcotics agents recovered two guns from the home where a shootout occurred.
Investigators found an assault-style rifle and a revolver during a search of the home following Friday's gunbattle, state police Lt. Robert Shilling said.
Authorities said the incident began as the undercover officers followed two men in a car they had observed being driven recklessly, possibly in a "road rage" incident on U.S. 84-285.
Both agents suffered minor injuries while Ben Maestas, 21, was shot in the cheek and ear. Authorities were investigating whose bullet hit Maestas.
State police, Santa Fe County and Rio Arriba County sheriff's deputies and Espanola police went to the scene, but state police who responded said they didn't fire at the men.
Shilling said Saturday police will give the case to the district attorney's office to determine whether any charges will be filed. N.Y. Armed Standoff Leads to Arrest, House Fire The Associated Press
SARANAC, N.Y. (AP) -- An armed man was arrested after burning down his trailer during a 20-hour standoff with police.
Mark Devins, 35, had been drinking and taking medication Friday night at the trailer he shared with his girlfriend when he loaded a shotgun, state police said.
The girlfriend, who was not identified, called police, who cordoned off the area around Devins' trailer.
Negotiations deteriorated as Devins continually refused to give up his weapon. The next day, Devins seemed agitated and at one point, fired a shot through the window, police said.
Devins appeared armed outside the trailer several times, but refused to cooperate with police. He then set fire to the trailer and came out after the structure became fully engulfed, police said.
Devins laid the shotgun on the ground and was taken into custody.
Devins is charged with reckless endangerment, criminal possession of a weapon, menacing and other charges. Additional charges are pending.
