Detroit city hall, county courts reopen after gun scare
Police chief says a private security guard had briefly left a checkpoint when a bag holding a gun moved through an X-ray machine
DETROIT — Detroit's police chief says security guards at a government building have discovered eight guns in recent months, a day after a visitor with a gun passed through a checkpoint before he could be stopped.
The security breach Monday forced a lockdown and evacuation at the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center that is home to Detroit city hall and Wayne County civil courts. The center is open for business again Tuesday.
Police Chief James Craig says a private security guard had briefly left a checkpoint when a bag holding a gun moved through an X-ray machine. The owner picked up the bag and walked into the building.
A man later was interviewed away from the building but not arrested. Police plan to meet with the private security company Tuesday.
