FORT WORTH, Texas — The Fort Worth Police Department created a violent crime task force in response to a shooting at a crowded park where five people were injured, the department said Monday.

On May 10, five people were hurt during a shooting at Village Creek Park in southeast Fort Worth, where more than 400 people had gathered despite restrictions on crowds during the coronavirus pandemic. The police department determined the shooting was gang-related.

The Violent Crime Detail, which was created directly after the Village Creek Park shooting, focuses on gun and gang violence, the police department said in a press release Monday evening.

The team is led by the Fort Worth police gang unit and special response teams, and includes Fort Worth officers from other units and state and federal law enforcement officers.

In the past week, the team has arrested 28 gang members and associates and seized 21 guns, body armor and a stolen vehicle. When asked if any of those arrests were connected with the park shooting or if anyone has been charged in the shooting, the police department said the shooting was still under investigation.
