BARTOW COUNTY, Ga. — An Emerson police officer shot and killed an armed suspect during a traffic stop, WSB TV reported.

Officer Robert Smith pulled over a gold SUV for a tag violation, the Georgia Bureau of Investigations told the publication. Smith discovered the driver, 27-year-old Brent Andrew Brannon, had outstanding warrants for trafficking heroin and was considered armed and dangerous.

Smith ordered Brannon to exit the vehicle, but he refused to comply. Smith attempted to deploy a TASER, then told Brannon to drop his gun. Smith then fired his weapon several times, striking Brannon.

Smith called that shots had been fired, and backup arrived to help secure the scene.

Two weapons were found inside the SUV.

Smith is on leave, per policy, pending investigation results.
