STOCKTON, Calif. — A sheriff’s K-9 was stabbed by a man with a knife during a domestic dispute Wednesday afternoon but is expected to recover, Stockton police said.
Stockton police officers were called to the Mormon Slough area near Hazelton Avenue and California Street at about 3:50 p.m. on a report of a female screaming and a male stating he was going to stab her, according to a news release from police posted on Facebook late Wednesday.
When officers arrived, they were able to separate the woman from her ex-husband, but he stood on the bank of the slough holding a hatchet and three knives and refused to comply with commands to give up. On-duty crisis negotiators attempted to convince him to surrender peacefully, but he still refused, police said.
The San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office was called for assistance with the use of their K-9 dogs. Two deputies with their dogs arrived at the scene.

The ex-husband became aggressive towards officers and was shot with bean-bag rounds, authorities said, and sheriff’s K-9s were also deployed. While taking the suspect into custody, he allegedly stabbed sheriff K-9 Kimbo twice with a knife, and officers used their Tasers to take him into custody.
Kimbo was transported to a veterinary hospital for treatment and is expected to fully recover.
John Sandoval, 59, was arrested on suspicion of making terrorist threats, brandishing a weapon, assault with a deadly weapon, assault on a K-9, and a parole violation. He was on parole for domestic violence. Sandoval was taken to the hospital for medical clearance and then will be transported to the San Joaquin County Jail.
