MESA, Ariz. A K-9 is recovering after a standoff with a burglary suspect that left the dog with multiple stab wounds Saturday.

According to AZ Central, 32-year-old Chad Bogle stabbed K-9 Jake several times as police responded to a burglary in progress. A neighbor reported that Bogle was armed with a gun.

Officers fired several bean bag rounds at Bogle before sending Jake after him. Bogle was bit, but then dragged the K-9 into the house, stabbing him multiple times before releasing him back to officers.

Police fired at least one round at Bogle after he exited the house an additional time. Bogle went back inside the home and was later found dead inside by police. It is unclear whether the round fired by an officer caused his death or if it was self-inflicted, according to the report.

Bogle had a long criminal history. He was convicted on multiple charges of drug paraphernalia, burglary, criminal trespass, theft and trafficking in stolen property in three separate cases.

Jake was rushed to an emergency vet and underwent surgery. He is now recovering at home.
