Editor's Note:

Patrolman Jarod Dean was killed this week when he was hit by a truck as he cleared debris from an Ohio roadway. Last year, 16 officers were struck and killed while outside their vehicles — the highest total since 2001 — despite so-called “move over” laws. PoliceOne columnist Joel F. Shults reminds us: “Use tools. Wear your big orange or ANSI green vest. Even in the day time. Every time. All the time. The whole time.”

BOSTON HEIGHTS, Ohio — Patrolman Jarod Dean was killed doing his dream job. He loved being a police officer - patrolling the midnight shift and making his fellow officers howl with his self-deprecating humor.

Dean, 24, was killed Monday when he was hit by a truck on Ohio 8 as he cleared debris from the roadway. He became the first officer in the Summit County village to die in the line of duty ... Full Story

Comment of the Week

"This is very exciting to read. Just yesterday I was thinking about this same situation and what I would do if this happened to me. It's great to see a real life example. This is why I keep my knives somewhat subdued, but readily available on the side opposite my gun. Very good work, I applaud you, deputy. "
