Healing the badge: Program helps police cope with trauma

CONTRA COSTA, Calif. — A little-known retreat in the west Marin County woods is helping heal police, firefighters, and other first responders who suffer post-traumatic stress, deep depression and other symptoms stemming from what they see or do on the job.

The West Coast Post-Trauma Retreat is one of two residential treatment programs in the world for first responders. This discreet program was set up by law enforcement officials and employs peer counselors that help guide officers to unravel the kind of trauma they cannot share with co-workers. Full article
