SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio police have arrested a second person in connection with the death of an off-duty San Antonio ISD police officer and officials say that man is now charged with capital murder.

Alfredo Martinez, 29, was taken into custody by officers with the Street Crimes Unit Saturday night, according to a social media post from the department’s public information office.

Earlier Saturday, Jorge Lopez, 23, was also charged with capital murder after police say he drove into Detective Cliff Martinez, 50, with a vehicle following a confrontation with Martinez.

The 28-year-veteran with San Antonio ISD’s police department was killed early Saturday as he attempted to break up a fight between two men while working an after-hours security job for a Southeast Side restaurant, San Antonio police said.

Officer Doug Greene, a spokesman for the San Antonio Police Department, said Lopez was arrested without difficulty shortly after the incident and that officers believe he was the driver of the vehicle that struck and killed Martinez.

At about 3:43 a.m. Saturday, officers responded to the 700 block of Hot Wells Boulevard where they discovered Martinez pinned beneath a vehicle.

Sgt. Michelle Ramos, an SAPD information officer, said Martinez died at the scene and that officers believe he was intentionally targeted by the suspects.

“We believe that the SAISD officer was assaulted while he was outside in the parking lot,” Ramos said. “At which time a vehicle ran over the SAISD officer.”

While being escorted in handcuffs by police Saturday evening, Lopez remained silent, walking head down and only responding to questions from reporters when asked if it was an accident and if he was sorry.

He quietly nodded his head in response to both questions.

Police continue to search for a third man, Victor Lopez, 21, who they also are calling a suspect.
