WASHINGTON, D.C. — Riders of ATVs and motorbikes are openly breaking the law on D.C. streets, but there’s not much police can do about it.

Dirt bikes, four-wheelers and other ATVs are illegal in the District, but the drivers know police can’t chase them. In fact, those familiar with the problem say some of the drivers come from other areas on stolen bikes because D.C. is known for its no-chase policy.

“It is going to end in tragedy one way or the other,” D.C. police union President Kristopher Baumann said. “Unfortunately, we have clear marching orders. We are not going to chase those vehicles.”
