UNION CITY, N.J. — An officer died from injuries sustained in an off-duty multi-vehicle accident.

John Kamel, 26, was riding his motorcycle to work Thursday night when he was involved in an accident, according to the Hudson Reporter. He succumbed to his injuries shortly after.

“I am in complete disbelief over the passing of PO John Kamel. I can still picture him speaking with business owners while walking patrol along Bergenline Avenue,” Mayor Brian Stack said in a statement.

Kamel joined the department in January 2013 after graduating college. The department thanked his family in a Facebook tribute.

“To John’s mother Reda “Helen” and father Sami, we thank you for John. As you know, John loved being a police officer in Union City,” the department wrote. “Please know that he served the people of Union City, his neighbors, well as a faithful and dedicated member of our department. We are as proud of him as you are! We are always here for you and we offer our unwavering love and support.”

According to the Hudson County View, Kamel’s passing marks the third Union City Police Department death in the past seven months. Ricardo Fernandez, 24, passed away unexpectedly in December, and Mark Zeitounain died in a May car accident while en route to work.
