ELLENSBURG, Wash. — Authorities have identified a Washington state sheriff's deputy who was killed and police officer who was wounded in a shootout during an attempted traffic stop.

Authorities said Wednesday that Kittitas County sheriff's Deputy Ryan Thompson was killed near the central city of Ellensburg. The 42-year-old was married with three children.

Kittitas police Officer Benito Chavez was shot in the leg and underwent surgery at a Seattle hospital. Officials say the 22-year-old is married and his wife is pregnant.

The suspect was shot and later died at a hospital. His identity hasn't been released.

Ellensburg Police Chief Ken Wade says the officers were responding to reports of a road rage incident when they were shot.
