Wanted man kills NC officer

LUMBERTON, N.C. — An officer was fatally shot Tuesday while trying to arrest a man wanted for homicide.

Lumberton Officer Jeremiah Goodson was off duty around 11 a.m. when he recognized the suspect outside a gas station, NBC 17 reported. Goodson immediately called officers to inform them of the suspect's location.

A second officer arrived on scene, and the two walked to the vehicle containing the suspect. The man opened fire from inside the vehicle, striking Goodson in the chest.

Police Chief Michael McNeil said the suspect is in custody.
