RICHMOND, Va. —  A Virginia state trooper died after being hit by an SUV while directing traffic from a state fair in Hanover County, authorities said.

On Friday, at 9:53 p.m. troopers were directing traffic along with at the intersection of Route 30 at Theme Park Way when a 1992 Jeep Cherokee struck trooper Andrew D. Fox, Virginia State Police informed in a press release.

According to the release, several bystanders and troopers lifted the SUV off Fox and two troopers began administering CPR. He was transported to VCU Medical Center where he died.

"Trooper Fox's death is a tremendous loss to the Virginia State Police family," said Colonel W. Steven Flaherty, Virginia State Police Superintendent in the press release.

He added, "He's highly-regarded and respected by his peers and supervisors across the state as a superior trooper, mentor, field training officer and instructor."

The two people in the SUV, an adult female from Doswell, Va. and a juvenile, were not hurt. Police say alcohol was not a factor.

Trooper Fox was wearing traffic safety vest when he was struck. The light at the intersection was blinking yellow so troopers could direct traffic using illuminated, baton flashlights.
