SOUTHBURY, Conn. — Trooper First Class Eugene Kenneth Baron Jr. died last Monday from cancer resulting from his response to the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001, state police confirmed Tuesday.

Baron served in the state police for 18 years. After graduating from the training academy, his first assignment was Troop A in Southbury, followed by Troop G in Bridgeport, and later the State Police Traffic Services Unit.

Trooper Baron and other Connecticut State Police Traffic Services Unit members were among those who responded to the World Trade Center following the terrorist attacks to search for survivors and serve as a liaison to Connecticut families.
