UNION PARISH, La. – A deputy has died after an on-duty heart attack.

According to KNOE, 69-year-old Sergeant Jerome McKenzie died July 27 after falling ill on duty.

He served as a first responder – first a firefighter then a cop – for over 40 years.

"He never treated anyone different no matter what they had done or their status in life," Deputy Melissa Bryan told KNOE. "Everyone was treated the same."
