PROVIDENCE, R.I. — A Johnston police officer has resigned after he was accused of having sex with a 16-year-old girl while on-duty.
Town authorities say Officer Paul DiMaio quit the police force Friday morning.
Assistant Town Solicitor William Conley says DiMaio allegedly had sexual relations with the teenager. Under state law, the teenager would be old enough to consent.
The girl's mother, who did not want to be identified, told WLNE-TV that two of the girl's friends discovered DiMaio and the teen Thursday evening. Johnston police began investigating a short time later.
DiMaio has not been charged with any crimes. In 2006, Johnston police suspended DiMaio for six months without pay for his handling of a situation involving a student while he worked as a school resource officer.
A phone listing for DiMaio could not immediately be found.
