CONROE, Texas — Police released body camera footage Thursday of a January 2016 foot pursuit where a convicted felon opened fire on an officer from less than three feet away.

Officer Greg Vradenburg was pursuing Christopher Hatton, 28, on foot after he fled from a traffic stop, KHOU reported. When Vradenburg caught up to Hatton, he was attempting to handcuff him when Hatton refused to show his hands.

“Something told me, ‘Just turn your body camera on’, and a couple of seconds later is when the shot came out,” Vradenburg told KHOU. “Everything slowed down. I saw the gun, saw his hand, saw the muzzle flash, but I never heard anything.”

Hatton was less than three feet away from Vradenburg when he opened fire. Thankfully, Vradenburg was not hit, ABC 13 reported.

“The grace of God, I don’t know,” Vradenburg said. “When (Hatton) turned and looked at me, and just the look of disbelief on his face, he was just as surprised he missed as I was.”

Hatton was detained by other officers and was sentenced on May 4 to 99 years in prison. He’ll be eligible for parole in 30 years.
