WORCESTER, Mass. — When police stopped a Rutland man in Worcester Saturday morning during a traffic stop, the man told police, “you are not getting in this car.”
Based on what police reported finding, there may have been a reason he didn’t want officers inside. Worcester police said the Rutland man had knives, a mask and a replica AR-15 inside the vehicle.
Trevor Borjeson, 24, of Rutland, is accused of gouging an officer’s eyes and kicking the officer in the face during the struggle as the traffic stop unfolded.
Police say he also had a 4-inch double-sided knife in his waistband.
An officer was on patrol Saturday in the Water Street area around 1:45 a.m. when he spotted a car go through a stop sign without stopping.
The officer pulled over the car, which had three people inside.
The driver, identified as Borjeson, ducked down as the officer approached. He was breathing heavy and shaking when the officer walked up to the window, police said.
Borjeson allegedly didn’t have a license. The officer spotted a large wooden stick in the car and, fearful there were other weapons in the car, went back to his cruiser and called for backup.
Another officer arrived, and they asked Borjeson to get out of the car.
“Mr. Borjeson refused, locked all the doors, and rolled up the windows. The officer called for more units and a supervisor,” police said. “The officer continued to speak with Trevor, who said, ‘You are not getting in this car.’ The two passengers also refused to exit the vehicle.”
More backup was called to the scene.
Borjeson allegedly grabbed a backpack, which had the barrel of a firearm coming out of it, police said.
The officer used a device to break open the window as police tried to unbuckle Borjeson’s seatbelt.
Borjeson grabbed the officer by the back of the head and pushed his thumbs into the officer’s eyes, then kicked the officer in the face, according to police.
An officer sprayed Borjeson with OC spray, and successfully removed him from the car. Police say Borjeson continued to fight and kick the officers on the ground.
“An officer saw that Mr. Borjeson appeared to be reaching for a knife in his waistband and delivered a drive stun with his department-issued Taser,” police said.
Borjeson was then handcuffed. A 4-inch double-sided knife was removed from his waist area, police said.
Officers then checked the car and allegedly found a mask, a double-sided 9-inch knife, and a very realistic-looking replica AR-15 style rifle in Borjeson’s backpack.
The front passenger, identified as 23-year-old Nicholas Mazzanaro of Connecticut, refused to get out of the vehicle, police said. He was then arrested for interfering with a police officer.
The rear passenger, Rufus Hamilton, also refused to get out of the car and was arrested on the same charge, authorities say.
Borjeson was charged with mayhem, two counts of assault and battery on a police officer, carrying a dangerous weapon, disorderly conduct, disturbing the peace, resisting arrest, interfering with a police officer, and motor vehicle charges.
Borjeson and the officer who had the eye injuries were treated at the scene.
